From bouquets to table centres, flowers are the crowning glory of any wedding scheme. We asked the experts about this season’s floral trends, and how you should go about picking the flowers for your big day.
Wei Yue, Founder of luxury boutique florist Front Row, explains the importance of scent and subtlety when choosing your flowers.
I think that 2018 will be a year of ‘soft over strong’. Perhaps partly inspired by Pantone’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet, we predict lilacs and dusty purples will be very popular.
I’ve noticed a lot of love for bouquets with trailing foliage, wild flowers and an altogether looser meadow-type style. Although these are on the rise, a classic cluster of roses is still the most popular effect.
People will always love roses for their connotations with love. However, there are so many different varieties that keep coming through. Paler, pastel and more vintage-looking roses are very sought-after at the moment, and when this is paired with a beautiful scent, they make a perfect bouquet or centrepiece.
Wedding décor is going through a very big change at the moment. Rather than arrangements in oasis where the containers are hidden, pots and vases are coming into fashion. Most notably, we predict hanging containers will be seen more and more, as well as potted plants and herbs being used as centrepieces. There’s also a trend for floral wedding cakes at the moment – tiers separated by flowers, edible or not, have changed the wedding cake game. It’s an altogether more rustic trend.
Fashion influences flowers, just as flowers influence fashion. We work with some fashion houses, such as Browns and Dover Street Market, to create the perfect accessories to fit current aesthetics.
My top tip is to always choose flowers with your dress or suit in mind. You don’t want the flowers to distract from what you’re wearing or vice versa. Choose flowers based on scent as well as how they look.Scent is the main trigger in memories; if you choose that perfect-smelling rose it will bring memories of your special day flooding back to you and your guests whenever you come across it in future.
