Choose fragrances full of big, heady white flowers when it comes to romance, says Roja Dove…
‘When you first see someone you are attracted to, you instantly feel that magical frisson of excitement,’ says Roja Dove, perfumer and fragrance historian. ‘As you get closer, you breathe in a little of their perfume and their olfactory tattoo is imprinted on your psyche. Fragrance has the ability to revive magical moments with startling clarity and emotion. Our sense of smell is one of the strongest senses, evoking memories, thoughts and feelings that linger in our minds for years.
Roja, who worked with the likes of Guerlain before setting up Roja Parfums, explains that this is because we don’t smell with our nose, but with the most primitive part of our brains. ‘When you smell a desirable fragrance on someone, the hormone balance in your body is stimulated and you subconsciously become attracted to them,’ he says.
When you’re in the mood for love, Roja advises choosing fragrances full of white flowers like jasmine, gardenia and tuberose. They all contain a molecule called indole that we, as human animals, produce naturally. You can also find it in orange blossom, honeysuckle, lilac and magnolia.
He also advises hunting down a fragrance that contains vanilla. He says: ‘It enhances sensations of pleasure across the central nervous system and the tiniest hint of it can speak volumes.’ Roja suggests applying scent in the dip of your collarbone, directly below your ear, so that when the one you love whispers sweet nothings to you, they are directly over this fragrant hot spot.
