My Neighbourhood | St Albans

Suzanne Taylor shares her favourite places to eat, drink and spend time in her area

HOME IS…
St Albans, where I live with my husband and cockapoo, Lennie. I’ve lived here for 10 years, and absolutely love the area. I’ve always lived in Hertfordshire, apart from a couple of stints living in America and Australia.

WORK IS…
My background is marketing and I’ve just launched a new range of luxury scented candles under the name Taylor Benfield. The scents are inspired by the colourful locations I’ve been lucky enough to visit, from Marrakech to the Mediterranean. The range is made up of six uplifting scents, all hand-picked by me and handpoured in the home counties.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR A SPECIAL MEAL…
I have a few! I really enjoy Greek food, so Bar Mez in St Albans or Bar Azita in Harpenden tick all the boxes for Greek-style sharing dishes. For yummy British food it’s definitely Dylans Kings Arms in St Albans. Bua Thai is a great local Thai, and finally L’Italiana is a fabulous local Italian.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS…
Côte in St Albans and The Hermitage in Hitchin do the perfect brunch for when you’re looking to chill out with friends and family. They’re always so relaxed and friendly.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR SOME RETAIL THERAPY…
Chloe James and The Dressing Room in St Albans are fantastic for accessing a variety of diff erent brands. Oliver Bonas is also a firm favourite for both clothes and gifts.

FAVOURITE SPOT WHEN I’M FEELING ENERGETIC…
I enjoy a good gym class like Body Balance or Body Attack, but nothing beats walking our dog. We love to get out in the fresh air and take him to places like Nomansland Common and Heartwood Forest.

FAVOURITE LOCAL DISCOVERY…
We’re spoilt for choice. The views from the Clock Tower are amazing – you really can see for miles. The Ghost and Ghouls walks and the tour around the abbey are all fun.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SOAK UP SOME CULTURE…
I love The Odyssey in St Albans. It’s a gorgeous cinema where you can catch a movie and enjoy a glass of wine, and there’s wonderful history behind the building, too. I’m looking forward to the St Albans Museum and gallery opening later in the year. We’re so lucky to have all the Roman history here, so I appreciate being able to drop into the Verulamium Museum and the Roman Theatre.
