Chef Scott Barnard reveals his favourite places to dine, visit and discover in and around Pitstone, Hertfordshire

Home is…
Pitstone, a village on the edge of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. I live with my wife, Deanna, and my two children; three-year-old Esme and Elliott, who’s 11 months. I’ve lived here for 11 years. I moved to Bedfordshire from South-East London when I was 13, and have lived around the three counties ever since.

Work is…
I’m currently Head Chef of Crockers Chef ’s Table fine dining restaurant in Potten End just outside Berkhamsted.  It’s an intimate 10-seater chef ’s table where I cook set menus in front of the guests. The idea is that the whole experience is built around interaction, so we encourage our guests to chat with us and ask all the questions they want. I cook seasonal dishes that change monthly and are served with great wine.

Favourite place for a special meal…
We don’t have too many great restaurants around the area, but I would have to say The Anchor in Tilsworth and The Three Oaks in Gerrards Cross, which both have excellent cooking and do a great Sunday lunch that I love. I can taste those crispy roast potatoes already, mmm!

Favourite place for brunch with friends…
There is a lovely restaurant and bar called HERE in Berkhamsted, which does a cracking breakfast, and the toasted sourdough is great, too. The place always has a good atmosphere.

Favourite place to soak up some culture…
National Trust’s Waddesdon Manor near Aylesbury is always a great day out. It is such a beautiful, grand building and the grounds and gardens, which often host installations, events and exhibitions, are amazing.

Favourite place for some retail therapy…
It’s definitely Milton Keynes town centre for me. There are plenty of shops there and places to eat with the kids, and it’s just up the road.

Favourite local discovery…
Puddingstone Distillery in Wilstone near Tring. They make some amazing, award-winning gin called Campfire, which is delicious with orange and rosemary. We serve it at the restaurant and – I ’m not being biased – it really is good.

Favourite spot for a family day out…
Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable is a family favourite – we’re members, so we make the most of that and visit quite a lot. My daughter particularly loves the sea lion show and the flamingos – probably because pink is her favourite colour!

Favourite spot when I’m feeling energetic…
I don’t do any exercise as I’m at work 15 hours’ a day. But we close on Sundays and Mondays, so then I get a workout running around after my two crazy kids!
