Nutritionist and hypnotherapist Nicola Shubrook of Urban Wellness on the best of her local area in and around Loughton, Essex

HOME IS…
I live in Loughton, having moved here from Wanstead about a year ago. I grew up in Woodford so I know Loughton and the area really well.

WORK IS…
After years working in media, I am now a qualified nutritionist and hypnotherapist. In particular, I work with clients to help better manage stress and anxiety, and the symptoms that can occur with it, such as IBS. I see clients privately in South Woodford or via Skype, and run corporate wellbeing programmes in London a few times a week.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR A SPECIAL MEAL…
I am a massive foodie and a lot of the time I love to cook and entertain at home, so you’ll often find me driving to Calcott Hall Farm in Brentwood to get fresh produce, or walking down to KC Fisheries for some fresh fish. I’m also a big fan of Bombetta in Snaresbrook. Their menu is frequently updated, so there’s always something new to try and Italian food is probably my favourite cuisine. I recently went to Haywards Restaurant in Epping, which was also very good, as was their wine list.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS…
My current favourite is The Organic Kitchen in Buckhurst Hill. They do peppered mackerel with eggs and a homemade horseradish sauce that is delicious. Pair it with a cup of Monmouth Coffee or a juice and you’re away. The staff are super-friendly and helpful, especially as I can’t eat gluten or dairy.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR SOME RETAIL THERAPY…
My retail therapy tends to be food-related and, being in Loughton, I’m spoilt with Smiths of Loughton for cookware and Organico for food and condiments. I can’t go past Lathams in Epping without going in (or coming out without something for the home!) and as a treat, I like Number Six on Epping High Street.

FAVOURITE SPOT WHEN I’M FEELING ENERGETIC…
I’m a runner and I have to run outside without headphones. I love that I can be in Epping Forest in two minutes. I have a 5km route I run three times a week that weaves around the back of Loughton, and then sometimes at the weekend I will walk from Loughton through the forest to the Queen Victoria pub in Theydon Bois, which is a good 90-minute walk.

FAVOURITE LOCAL DISCOVERY…
Since moving to Loughton I have discovered The Gardeners Arms on York Hill. The view on a clear day over London is fantastic. It’s worth the walk up there, and then grabbing a glass of something to end the week.
