We chatted to Nicola Metcalfe a local illustrator this month, to find out her favourite places to visit in Berkshire…

Home Is…Marlow Bottom. I’ve lived here since 1999. I grew up in Marlow but felt I needed to get out and see the world so I moved to Marlow Bottom.

Work Is…
I’m currently trying to eke out a living as an illustrator! I would describe my style as bright, contemporary and maybe a little bit quirky. During the past couple of years, I have enjoyed commissions from the likes of Tate and John Lewis, also the Henley Royal Regatta and Leander Club more locally. My latest piece is a celebration of the UK which I hope will appeal to everybody.

Favourite place to spend a relaxing Sunday…
I love the National Trust so it would have to be Greys Court near Henley when the bluebells are in flower. Naturally, one would have to eat scones, clotted cream and jam to fully appreciate the bluebells and to keep one’s strength up! I also love the stretch of river Thames between Marlow and Bourne End and I enjoy visiting Cliveden too.

Most memorable meal I’ve had locally…
Well, shamefully I shall have to mention scones again when I went for afternoon tea at Cliveden House for my birthday last year.

Favourite place for a night out with friends…
Conventional nights out with friends are rather few and far between but I like doing bat walks or badger spotting which usually involves the children too. I also love seeing the beacon on West Wycombe Hill being lit, to celebrate midsummer every year, it’s really atmospheric.

Favourite spot for some retail therapy…
Bucks Open Studios; a local art trail every summer where artists open their studios to visitors. It’s the most incredible means of buying directly from the artist or maker, plus you get to nose in people’s studios. Now I am a participant, unfortunately I am less able to visit all the amazing venues.

Best place for a nightcap…
That would have to be at home, next to my wood burning stove in the middle of winter, maybe with a Swedish drama on the television.

Favourite local discovery…
I like getting out the Ordnance Survey map and seeing where we can get to by foot from our own front door. It’s always surprising what there is, right on the doorstep (apart from the wellies and recycling bins,of course!).

Building I’d most like to live in…
I really rather like those riverside dwellings in Bourne End. Some of them are quite quirky – can you only get home by boat, I wonder?

Favourite place to soak up some culture…
Hall Barn in Beaconsfield, where Chiltern Shakespeare Company performs every June. I would have to say this because sometimes I’m in it! But putting that to one side, the grounds are spectacular and when the weather is favourable, a fizz-soaked picnic by the lake followed by some Shakespearean farce is hard to beat.

Best spot for a family day out…
Come on, it has to be Cliveden! My goodness, the number of days out we’ve had there, well, I can’t even begin to imagine. As long as they have a couple of chums to run amok with, my children never seem to tire of it.
