My Neighbourhood Brentwood

Juliet Thomas, co-founder of #IAMANESSEXGIRL campaign and The Mother Hub on the best of her local area in and around Brentwood, Essex

HOME IS…
I live in Hutton in Brentwood, Essex, with my husband and two sons, aged six and two. We moved from the city six years ago looking for a balance of green space, good schools and an easy commute back into London. I thought I’d miss the buzz of the city, but there’s so much going on locally, I haven’t missed it at all.

WORK IS…
I was Global Head of Customer Service for a financial media organisation, and a few years ago, I retrained as a freelance career coach and consultant. I’m also Co-Founder of The Mother Hub, a blog and networking group for Essex women. In 2016 we launched #IAmAnEssexGirl campaign. We’ve also started The Mother Hub Mingle events, meeting some incredible women and having lots of fun. It helps that my business partner, Natasha Sawkins, and I are old friends.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR A SPECIAL MEAL…
With two small children, fancy dinners are few and far between! But we like to head out with the kids, and love The George & Dragon in Mountnessing and The Bull on Brook Street, which has a gorgeous pub garden with a great children’s play area. ACanteen in Chelmsford is one of my happy places. It has a wonderful atmosphere, they serve brunch all day and the spicy baked eggs are to die for.

FAVOURITE SPOT WHEN I’M FEELING ENERGETIC…
South Weald Country Park has stunning views of the Essex countryside and I often take our six-year-old to the Junior Park Run there on Sundays – a great (free!) community activity.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR SOME RETAIL THERAPY…
Chelmsford, since the recent Bond Street redevelopment. In Brentwood, my favourite independent shop is Chicken and Frog Bookshop. It has a lovely selection of books for children, and an impressive Lego collection that the kids find fascinating.

FAVOURITE LOCAL DISCOVERY…
Warley Place in Great Warley. Once the garden of a leading Edwardian horticulturalist, the estate is now managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust, and the gardens are a stunning mix of wild flowers and exotic plants.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SOAK UP SOME CULTURE…
The Brentwood Theatre is a great community theatre, which is home to many fantastic, local theatre companies. Another favourite is the Everyman Cinema in Chelmsford – I’ve often joked I’d like to move in. It has comfy sofas with cushions, loads of leg room, and your favourite tipple served to you in your seats.
