My Neighbourhood | Jessica Jonzen on Lane End

Our own deputy editor Jessica Jonzen reveals her favourite places to dine, visit and shop in her home of Lane End, Buckinghamshire.

Home is…

with my husband, Will, and our two children, Ottilie, aged six, and three-year-old Zac. We’ve lived here for two years after ten years in London. Lane End is a pretty village which still has everything you need, surrounded by the stunning Chiltern Hills but with bustling Marlow less than a ten minute drive away.

Work is…

I’m the Deputy Editor here at Exclusive Magazines. We have a huge array of content, so I could be writing an interiors feature one moment and interviewing an A-list celebrity the next. I’m also on the committee for The Frieth Hilly, a wonderful 10k and 5k race through the Hambleden Valley each  October which raises money for my daughter’s school.

Favourite place to spend a relaxing Sunday…

We’ll usually go for a family walk, starting at nearby Skirmett, going up through the woods and enjoy the extraordinary views over Fingest and the valley. The children love spotting the windmill from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We’ll reward ourselves with a drink and a bite to eat at The Frog at Skirmett afterwards. Their fish and chips are incredible!

Favourite place for a special meal…

We love The Royal Oak at Bovingdon Green near Marlow. There’s a great atmosphere and the menu is always really innovative. The rustic breads with roasted garlic are a must and make sure you leave room for pudding!

Favourite place for brunch with friends…

Fego’s on Marlow High Street has an excellent brunch menu, from a Ranchero breakfast to pancakes, granola or Eggs Benedict. It’s great to catch up with friends at one of the booth tables at the front of the café and read the papers.

Favourite place for some retail therapy…

Marlow has to be my go-to place for shopping. I’ll head to Sara Hughes on West Street for quirky prints, crockery or glassware, and Biggie Best on Spital Street for reasonably priced mirrors and lighting. The Marlow Book Shop is a real joy and the staff are extremely knowledgeable. I’ll refuel with a cup of coffee at Satollo, the Italian deli in Liston Court, and treat myself to some beautiful blooms from The Flower Studio next door.

Favourite spot when I’m feeling energetic…

I love being out in the fresh air, and so will go on walks through the Hambleden Valley or for runs through Lane End, Bolter End and Wheeler End. If the weather is bad, I’ll go to the Wycombe Leisure Centre to swim or do a class.

Favourite local discovery…

Lacey’s Farm Shop in Lane End. It’s a family-run dairy farm with a wonderful new shop and butcher. We buy our milk there and will often stop by for a fresh loaf of bread and something from the deli.

Favourite place to soak up some culture…

The River and Rowing Museum in Henley, which is only 20 minutes away, always has some interesting exhibitions. It was great to see original Hockneys so close to home. In September, the Henley Literary Festival sees the town come alive with some of the biggest names in literature giving readings and talks about their work.

Favourite spot for a family day out…

Hughenden Manor in High Wycombe. There are wonderful walks and trees for the children to climb. The Walled Garden is great for garden inspiration – and a game of hide and seek!
