My Neighbourhood | Janice Issitt on Aston Abbots

We chatted to Janice Issitt a wildlife volunteer and freelance interior designer, photographer and blogger this month, to find out her favourite places to visit in Buckinghamshire…

Home is…
I live in Aston Abbotts, a small village just outside Aylesbury, with my four cats and various wildlife that I foster for Tiggywinkles wildlife hospital. I moved here nearly 10 years ago to escape the hustle of London and have more space for my interior designing.

Work is…
The village is set up on top of a hill with no shops, just one great pub called The Royal Oak which
is thatched and dates back hundreds of years. I now work freelance as a photographer, interior designer and blogger janiceissittlifestyle.blogspot.co.uk.  I volunteer for the largest wildlife hospital in the country, Tiggywinkles in Haddenham.

Favourite place to spend a relaxing Sunday…
I have spent so much time decorating my home that I spend most Sundays in the house working on craft projects and taking photos. Some weekends I go out to meet up with other bloggers and we explore different areas of the UK together.

Most memorable meal I’ve had locally…
I moved from London where doorstep, so now I tend to like a good old English Sunday Roast. If I have visitors from abroad they love eating at my local pub and can’t believe the size of the Sunday Roast, with an enormous
Yorkshire pudding! As I visit Haddenham a lot when on wildlife rescues I usually pop to a great café there called Little Italy for brunch and good coffee.

Favourite place for a night out with friends…
A favourite night out for me would be to go to the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, it’s a new theatre and very impressive.
I’ve seen such a wide range of plays, musicals, comedians and ballets there and it’s fabulous to have such a great theatre on my doorstep.

Favourite place for some retail therapy…
I really love the small independents; my favourite clothes shops are White Hart Studios in Haddenham and Amelie on the High Street in Berkhamsted. For quirky gifts and home accessories I go to see my friend at Holy Cow Home on Cambridge Street in Aylesbury. My last purchases were a cool lightweight designer coat from Amelie and some antique wooden shoe maker moulds from Holy Cow Home.

Building you’d most like to live in…
There are so many beautiful properties in Buckinghamshire but I think my ideal place would be a small French manor house with large rooms and high ceilings, with a slightly scruffy fading grandeur. Somewhere I could invite other photographers to come to and build room sets for magical images.

Favourite local discovery…
There are many beautiful National Trust properties in Buckinghamshire; the most impressive of all has to be Waddesdon Manor and Claydon is also lovely. However, the view from the edge of my village is just as beautiful and a constant reminder of why I moved out of London. There are so many great views around the county across the Chiltern Hills and I love discovering bluebell woods or poppy fields because they offer such fantastic photo opportunities.

Favourite place to soak up some culture…
A great afternoon for me would be tea at Hartwell House, which offers a wonderful combination of culture, interiors and good food. You can even go for a pamper afterwards in the spa and the grounds are very pretty.

Best spot for a family day out…
I would take family to the Tiggywinkles visitor centre and show them all the wildlife that are permanent residents there as they are too injured to return to the wild, including hedgehogs, foxes and many birds including Red Kites.
