My Neighbourhood | Jackie Ladbury on Ware

Jackie Ladbury, My Neighbourhood, Ware

Author Jackie Ladbury reveals her favourite places to dine, visit and shop in Ware, Hertfordshire, and beyond…

Home is…
I live in Ware with my husband, Stephen, and one daughter. Our other daughter now lives in London. We bought our Edwardian semi about 12 years ago. We had just finished doing up the Victorian house we lived in, when my husband came in from work one night and said: ‘Pack your bags, we’re moving!’ He’d seen the house of his dreams and we moved about 200 yards up the road.

Work is…
I have two work hats. One is working part time for the family bespoke kitchen business, John Ladbury and Co, organising the adverts and promo, and the other is writing novels. My debut novel, Air Guitar and Caviar, is out now on Amazon and I have a second novel coming out at the end of the summer. Writing is pretty much always there in the background for me. There isn’t a day when I’m not either writing or thinking about writing. Nowadays, writers are expected to have a large social media presence, too, so it’s full-on.

Favourite place to spend a relaxing Sunday…
I often go to the Nuffield gym in Hertford on a Sunday morning with my daughter. She does ‘gym’ things, and I mostly go for a leisurely swim and sauna, and wait for her in the café. They do a gorgeous honey yoghurt with fresh fruit… Oh dear, it doesn’t sound as if I’m burning off many calories.

Most memorable meal…
We celebrated our eldest daughter’s graduation at a restaurant called Pitt Cue in London, near Liverpool Street. Everyone was buzzing, as it was such a joyous occasion, and we were all in the mood for a good time (the Champagne helped!). Although the food sounded eclectic (cod’s roe and turnip anyone?), it was wonderful.

Favourite place for a night out with friends…
The Tilbury at Datchworth has never let us down and you can have something as simple as a T-bone steak. But I enjoy going anywhere – if there’s wine, I’ll have a great night!

Best place for a nightcap…
Casa Lua in Ware is always great for tapas and late drinks and, although it’s small, they are very accommodating. If they can fit you in, they will!

Favourite spot for some retail therapy…
That has to be St Albans. It has most of the shops I love, and there are lots of lovely cafés and restaurants there, too, so it’s a win-win, really.

We all love to go on a family walk around the lake at the Verulamium Park in St Albans, especially when the ducklings have hatched. We will then usually gravitate towards the Waffle House for a spot of indulgence. I always go for the same – my favourite is the Pecan Nut Waffle with Butterscotch Sauce. It’s truly delicious.

Favourite local discovery…
It’s not so much a discovery now, as it has really moved on, but years ago my husband used to go fishing at a place called the Three Lakes in Ware, which was little more than a farm at the time. I used to take the children and pack some sandwiches and a flask, and we’d mess around in the water and walk around the lakes. Now it’s a super-duper restaurant that you can hire out for weddings and events. Breakfast/ brunch there is always good, too.
